Research should include: lit circles, student driven assessment, portfolios in the classroom, writing workshop techniques, and...crap, I knew I would forget!

Sounds like you're getting your topic narrowed down - and somewhat reassuring to hear that I'm not the only one a bit concerned with the short timeline to collect data.
One of the things that struck me about COA's article was that her success seemed to come on the heels of a more structured approach. My experience has shown me that students, althought they might disagree, really do thrive structure. Perhaps it is their inherent need to rebell - but I've had greater success with structured assignments then unstructured - perhaps because my whole approach as an art teacher is to encourage students to flex their personal voice. Giving them structure not only gives them a place to start, but something to work against. Does that sound convoluted?
